Duke fan mocks Flint water crisis during basketball game against MSU

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

On Tuesday night, during a basketball game between Michigan State University and Duke University, a Duke fan thought it would be appropriate, for some reason, to bring a sign mocking the Flint water crisis.

“The water tastes better in North Carolina,” the sign read.

“The sign was disgusting and a slam to those who are suffering in our state,” Michigan State said in a statement, which was sent to ESPN. “We understand the actions of an individual student do not reflect the beliefs of Duke University or its Athletic Department.”

“Everyone in our program thinks the sign was reprehensible and disgusting,” Cory Walton, a Duke spokesperson, told ESPN. “That’s 100 percent not in line with the values of our program.”

A Duke spokesperson also said that the school policy does not permit offensive or distasteful signs, and the school is working to investigate how the sign got into the Cameron Indoor Stadium in the first place.

This isn’t the first time fans have made fun of players and fans from Michigan, either. Last weekend, an image went viral showing a fan holding a sign that read: “Michigan Girls: More Diseased Than Flint Water.”
