Jennifer Holliday is no longer going to perform at Donald Trump’s inauguration, and apparently, a large part of the reason she changed her mind was the extreme backlash she faced for the decision, including death threats.
During an appearance on “The View,” Holliday explained why she decided not to attend the “Make America Great Again! Welcome Celebration,” specifically citing “death threats from black people.”
“I got the call on Wednesday night [to perform], then Friday morning I woke up and there was this whole thing of terrible tweets and things on my Instagram,” Holliday said.
“We hadn’t really finalized everything yet and my publicist said, ‘People want to talk to you.’ I live a pretty reclusive life and then one morning you wake up and everyone hates you. I was like, what could I have possibly done to have these things thrown at me?” she added.
“I’m an artist and I love America,” she said. “It just didn’t dawn on me. I performed for four other presidents. I didn’t think anything of it.”
She then said of her move to cancel the performance, “I didn’t call them up. I just sent an email and said it had gotten out of hand. I was receiving death threats at this point. I was receiving death threats from back people, the N-word from black people. They were saying they were going to kill me.”
Asked how she knew the threats were coming from black people, Holliday explained that she knew “because I looked.”
“I read everything. At first, I said, ‘Are these white people just messing with me? I’m going, ‘Oh my God, these are black people calling me this. They were saying I should kill myself.”
