On Monday night, Russell Simmons announced that he was cutting ties with President Donald Trump, whom he once considered to be a friend.

“He wrote the foreword to my first two books — I know him very well,” Simmons told the New York Daily News. He later added, “I was with him on his first date with Melania. We were friends for many years.”

“Not anymore,” he said. “I’m sure he doesn’t consider me a friend after some of the statements I’ve made.”

Simmons has been an outspoken critic of the president since he announced his candidacy in 2015, and Simmons admitted that the split between himself and Trump happened when he compared Trump to Kim Kardashian.

“We haven’t been friends since the day he announced and I said, ‘I’d rather Kim Kardashian be President’ so he called the office and that was the end of our friendship,” he said.

“I didn’t pick the phone up,” Simmons said, adding that he asked his assistant to tell Trump to look the interview up on Google if he had any questions about the content. “I said, ‘It’s on video! Tell him it’s on video!’ And we didn’t speak after that.”
