Department of Ed. honors W.E.B Du Bois, and then spells his name wrong

The Department of Education tried to honor W.E.B. Du Bois, but they misspelled his name. Then, they misspelled their apology.

It’s not exactly the most encouraging thing to see from the Department of Education, which we’d hope would have a good grasp of the English language, spelling and history. Then again, since the confirmation of Betsy DeVos, even that is coming into question.

In the original tweet, the Department of Education wrote, “Education must not simply teach work – it must teach life.” The quote was credited to “W.E.B. DeBois.”

They tried to fix the tweet with an apology that also included a type, saying “our deepest apologizes for the earlier typo.”

This does not bode well for the state of education in the United States.
