Woman jumps on back of man attacking Baton Rouge police officer

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

On Sunday morning, Vickie Williams-Tillman was just running errands when she saw a police officer engaged in a heated argument with a man who had pulled over to the side of the road.

The officer reportedly attempted to put the man in handcuffs, and as Williams-Tillman pulled up to ask the officer if he needed help, the man became aggressive, leaping toward the officer before the officer could answer her question.

Williams-Tillman called 911, but when the man began to assault the officer with his own baton, she jumped out of her car onto the attacker’s back.

“Risking her own safety she jumped out of her vehicle and onto the back of the 28-year old assailant,” the Baton Rouge Police Department said in a statement. “Ms. Williams-Tillman was able to help hold off the assailant until other officers arrived.”

“For going above and beyond in that moment to help our officer and possibly save his life we are forever grateful to you Ms. Vickie! For showing so much love and concern for one of our officers BRPDSalutes you,” the department added, posting about the incident on Facebook.

As for Williams-Tillman, she said she wasn’t concerned about her own safety at the time.

“It was something that went through my soul,” Williams-Tillman told The Advocate. “You don’t think about the risk.”
