Baltimore cops in Freddie Gray case face internal discipline; three could be fired

Five Baltimore officers who were involved in the Freddie Gray case are now facing internal discipline, with three facing the possibility of being fired.

According to The Baltimore Sun, five Baltimore officers who were involved in the Freddie Gray case are now facing internal discipline, with three facing the possibility of being fired.

Officer Caesar Goodson, who was driving the van when Gray received his fatal injuries, is one of those facing termination, along with Lt. Brian Rice and Sgt. Alicia White. The other two, Officers Edward Nero and Garrett Miller, were the ones who initially arrested Gray and face five days of unpaid suspension.

Officer William Porter, despite being criminally charged with manslaughter by prosecutors, is reportedly not facing any internal discipline.

The Montgomery and Howard county police departments completed the investigation into the officers after the Baltimore department asked them to take over the case to prevent a conflict of interest. The officers have reportedly been charged with “violations of policy and procedure,” and while a report detailing the results of the investigation was given to the BPD on May 12, details have not yet been released. However, the fact that the officers were all charged indicates that the investigation found that they did, in fact, break the rules.

The officers all have the option to accept the recommended punishment or take the matter to a “trial board,” which would be open to the public under a new state law.
