Police in Washington, D.C. have found a noose hanging from a tree outside an art museum on the National Mall.

The noose was found by a Smithsonian police officer hanging west of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden after it had closed for the day on Friday.

No one can be sure just how long the noose was hanging in the tree and Smithsonian Secretary David J. Skorton condemned the extremely racist display in his email to staff on Saturday.
