R&B singer Mario took to Instagram to mourn the loss of his mother, Shawntia Hardaway.

“Your soul lives forever beside mine! We love you Shawntia Hardaway I love you eternally,” he wrote on the caption of a throwback image that he shared as part of his tribute to his mother.

When Mario’s music career was just starting to take off, his mother was struggling with a drug addiction, and he worked hard to get her clean again, insisting that she could not travel with him until she was drug-free. Eventually, she did check herself into a treatment facility in Los Angeles.

In 2008, Mario started a charity for the children of drug addicts, which he described as a personal cause.

However, in 2010, Mario was arrested for assault after he allegedly shoved his mother. Responding police found several broken items and furniture in the home, though Hardaway dropped the charges against her son.

They moved apart, and the separation has only helped their relationship.

“That space allowed her to be a woman instead of me being the guardian over her telling her what to do. It allowed me to grow as a man, and it allowed her to decide where she wanted her life to go,” Mario told Madame Noire in 2013.

Now, our deepest condolences go out to Mario in this time of grief.

Your soul lives forever beside mine! We love you Shawntia Hardaway I love you eternally.
