America’s Got Talent contestant Johnny Manuel achieved the impossible: he got Simon Cowell to grin over a Whitney Houston cover.

Manuel sang “I Have Nothing,” a complex song that demands much of the singer, so it was already an ambitious choice when he started out. Add to that the fact that Cowell has repeatedly warned contestants away from covering Houston because they just can’t stand up to the great singer, and the only way this could work was if Manuel knocked it out of the park.

And he did.

Manuel, who is a resident of Flint, Michigan, nailed the cover so well that the judges were left stunned and the audience got to its feet when he was finished.

Check out the epic cover below and see it for yourself.
