Parishioners mourn reverend fatally stabbed by teen girl

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

A California community is in mourning after the loss of a 79-year-old reverend who was discovered stabbed to death on Saturday.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, the victim, Willie Hunter, was allegedly stabbed multiple times by a 16-year-old female attacker. The sheriff’s department stated that the two fought before the stabbing and that they knew each other prior to the attack. Although the teen fled in Hunter’s vehicle, she was found by authorities the next day and was booked on suspicion of murder.

Alexander Brandon, a friend of Hunter’s, said that his body was found by a friend during a welfare check, and now the community is mourning the loss of a “stand-up man, a real man of God,” as Brandon described him. Hunter was an associate minister at the United in Christ Baptist Church of Apple Valley, per the church’s website.

“[He] was always nice to everybody. Give you the shirt off his back. Give you the food on his plate,” he said. “Someone you could always go to, someone you could just ask a question, and he’ll give you the guidance of God from there, just lead you on the right path.”
