On Thursday, President Donald Trump doubled down on his comments defending the presence of Confederate effigies across the country, tweeting his sadness over the removal of the “beautiful statues and monuments.”

“Sad to see the history and culture of our great country being ripped apart with the removal of our beautiful statues and monuments. You can’t change history, but you can learn from it,” Trump tweeted.

“Robert E Lee, Stonewall Jackson – who’s next, Washington, Jefferson? So foolish! Also the beauty that is being taken out of our cities, towns and parks will be greatly missed and never able to be comparably replaced!”

Trump’s tweets come after an unhinged Tuesday press conference where he shockingly came to the defense of white supremacists who rallied on the campus of the University of Virginia in the name of “white power.”

Some white supremacist leaders have praised Trump for his comments, including former KKK grand wizard David Duke, who applauded the president for his “honesty” and “courage.”
