Former FBI Director James Comey was drowned out by student protesters when he tried to give the commencement speech at Howard University.

Before Comey had gotten more than a few words into the speech, protesters began to sing “We Shall Not Be Moved.” The students chanted phrases like “Get out James Comey, you aint my homie” and “I love being black” as well as “We are here to reclaim this space” and “No Justice, no peace.”

Comey quietly listened to the protests before trying again, saying, “I hope you’ll stay and listen to what I have to say. I listened to you for five minutes.”

Eventually, Comey simply gave his speech by talking over the protesters with prepared remarks about how sometimes the world is “too noisy” for reflection.

“Welcome to Howard. I’m honored to be here and I’m looking forward to adult conversations about what is right and what is true,” he concluded.

The protest was organized by group #HUResist, a “collective of student activists, which formed last spring in response to Howard University’s collaboration with the Trump administration.”

“James Comey represents an institution diametrically opposed to the interests of Black people domestically and abroad,” the organization said in a statement. “We will always remain principled and stand tall in the face of anti-Blackness wherever it shows up.”

“Furthermore, we challenge Howard University’s ties to the establishment at large and seek to create an environment in which the spirit of liberation prevails.”
