‘Death of a Salesman’ on Broadway to star Wendell Pierce, Sharon D. Clarke

The West End revival was critically acclaimed, earning Clarke an Olivier award

Death of a Salesman is coming back to Broadway, this time with Wendell Pierce and Sharon D. Clarke leading the production.

One of the most beloved shows in the American theatre canon, Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman was last seen on Broadway ten years ago with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Linda Emond. The new revival (the same as The Young Vic’s 2019 West End production), is moving to Broadway with the official theatre and dates yet to be announced.

Reprising the Olivier-nominated role, Pierce will take on the role of Willy Loman opposite Clarke, who won the Olivier as Best Actress in the role of Linda Loman. Also joining the cast is Broadway legend André De Shields fresh off his run in Hadestown. The Tony Award-winner will play Willy’s brother Ben while Khris Davis joins the cast as Biff Loman.

Miranda Cromwell, who co-directed the London version, will direct the Broadway run. She shared in a statement, “Looking at Death of a Salesman from the perspective of a Black family living in a predominantly white capitalist world changes the way that you hear this text. Wendell and Sharon illuminate the heart of this play in a new way that is both universal and entirely specific.”

Marianne Elliott, who co-directed the West End version will remain as a producer through Elliott & Harper Productions, per Deadline. Elliott & Harper Productions also said in a statement, “We’re thrilled to bring this new production of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman to Broadway, led by the brilliant Miranda Cromwell.

Cromwell brings a unique vision and perspective to this classic piece of American theater and explores some of the most important themes at the heart of the show in an entirely new light. There is no better team to tell this story for a new generation of Broadway audiences.”

Complete cast, creative team and more will be announced at a later date.
