DOROTHY HEIGHTDr. Dorothy Height, chairwoman of the National Council of Negro Women, declared in a recent interview that President Obama should be left alone. “We have never sat down and said to the 43 other presidents: ‘How does it feel to be a Caucasian? How do you feel as a white president? Tell me what that means to you,’ ” Dr. Height said. “I am not one to think that he should do more for his people than for other people. I want him to be free to be himself.”(AP Photo/Jose Luis Magana)

LYNDON JOHNSON – Although overshadowed by both John F. Kennedy and his brother Robert, who were both assassinated for their brazen support of civil rights for African Americans, Lyndon Baines Johnson not only continued their work in civil rights but extended the struggle to eradicating poverty and dedicating the nation to education for all. Committed to implementing his “Great Society” program, Johnson declared a “war on poverty” and launched programs such as Project Head Start, Medicare, Medicaid and food stamps that continue to assist all Americans, including African Americans. This matched with the countless civil rights legislation pushed through during his tenure gives Johnson an enduring legacy of action that is, unfortunately, mired by the controversy that still surrounds the Vietnam War.
