Celebrated neurologist and author Dr. Oliver Sacks is making a film, called Alive Inside, about how patients in a nursing home react to listening to their favorite music again. He did this by introducing them to the iPod and recording the changes in their behavior. Recreational therapist Yvonne Russel says that the reactions that music brings out of the patients are “amazing.”

Henry is a patient that has been in the nursing home for ten years because he was having seizures and his wife could no longer take care of him. He had trouble interacting with others in the home, and barely spoke. His nurses say that, after asking his children, they introduced him to the iPod. His eyes light up and when asked what kind of music he likes he said: “Cab Calloway makes beautiful music.”
