Burglary suspect dead after 13-year-old boy opens fire during home invasion

Burglary suspect dead after 13-year-old boy opens fire during home invasion.

The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating a burglary in which one burglary suspect was shot dead after a 13-year-old inside the home the suspects were trying to enter grabbed his mother’s gun and shot at them.

Deputies responded to reports of shots fired at the home and asked the boy to come out of the house. He came out without incident and explained to the officers that he had been firing at burglars.

“He saw a subject out back trying to get inside so he fired his mother’s gun through the door and the subject reportedly fired back,” CCSO officials said.

The boy said that he feared for his safety when he saw one of the suspects trying to get inside the home. He also shot at the car that the suspects fled to as they were driving away.

Shortly afterward, a grey car arrived at Trident Hospital with several gunshot holes, and a passenger had multiple gunshot wounds. The passenger was rushed to the ER but later died of his wounds.

The boy’s mother said that the entire family was shaken up after the incident, noting that they had just moved into the house in May and that they had not seen any crime in the neighborhood before now.

The family left their home for the night, saying that they did not feel safe sleeping at home after the harrowing incident.

WCBD reports some additional details:
