Charlie Wilson weighs in on Frank Ocean, Chris Brown feud

The former lead singer of the Gap Band, Charlie Wilson, is not a stranger to falling on hard times. The Oklahoma native has seen his fair share of ups and downs, as he battled alcohol and drug addiction in the mid 1980s and early 90s.
Uncle Charlie, however, has bounced back. He voluntarily checked himself into rehab and says he’s been sober for 19 years.
TheGrio caught up with Mr. Wilson as he was promoting his new album, Love, Charlie, and the elder statesmen of the genre gave his opinion on the feud between Chris Brown and Frank Ocean.
“I understand how it is to be popular and famous and young,” Wilson said. “I’ve been there. I’ve been reckless before. All you need is someone who’s much older, who’s been in this game, who’s old enough to be your grandfather. You should be able to listen to me.”

Wilson continues to be one of the most respected voices in the music industry.
He said competition in his day was friendly and didn’t involve the violence and negativity surrounding some artists today.
“We had rivals but we were never beefing,” Wilson said. “My rival was Zapp and Roger (Troutman). But me and Roger were tight.”
