Dr. Dre addresses and apologizes for Dee Barnes incident

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

Dr. Dre is offering a public apology for his behavior in the infamous incident in which he attacked journalist Dee Barnes in 1991.

In part two of The Defiant Ones, HBO’s docuseries on Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine, Dr. Dre spoke about how he had attacked Barnes after she conducted an interview with him and was subsequently critical of the group NWA.

“Any man that puts his hands on a female is a f–king idiot,” he recalled in the series. “He’s out of his f–king mind, and I was out of my f–king mind at the time. I f–ked up, I paid for it, I’m sorry for it, I apologize for it.”

“I have this dark cloud that follows me,” he added. “And it’s going to be attached to me forever. It’s a major blemish on who I am as a man.”

Dr. Dre had previously spoken to Rolling Stone about the incident, but because that interview was right around the time of the release of Straight Outta Compton, which didn’t portray the incident with Barnes at all, the move was seen by many as a PR move rather than a real apology.

However, this one seems a little more real, especially with its strong warning about domestic violence.
