‘I’m living life’: Floyd Mayweather drops $200,000 at Gucci amid calls for boycott

"I’m not a follower. You know when everybody else they say, ‘Everybody gonna boycott?’ I say guess what, this boy gonna get on a yacht and live life,” he told TMZ Sports.

Despite entertainers such as T.I., Spike Lee and Soulja Boy calling for a boycott of Gucci amid the brand’s blackface controversy, boxing champ Floyd Mayweather says the backlash doesn’t sway his decision to support the company, according to Complex.

“I’m not no follower, I do what the of*ck I wanna do,” Floyd said when TMZ Sports caught up with him and his crew shopping at a Gucci store in Beverly Hills.

When told that Lee, T.I. and the culture in general would be disappointed with him dropping over $200,000 at the store, the famed boxer fired back with: “You said they’re gonna be upset with me? I love it, I love it, I love it. See, the thing is this, I live for myself. I do what I want to do. I’m not a follower. You know when everybody else they say, ‘Everybody gonna boycott?’ I say guess what, this boy gonna get on a yacht and live life.”

As TheGrio previously reported, Gucci has apologized after complaints that a turtleneck with an oversized collar and cut-out red lips designed to cover the face resembled blackface. The item was reportedly pulled from its online and physical stores.

“Gucci deeply apologizes for the offense caused by the wool balaclava jumper,” the company said in statement, adding that it was committed to diversity and considered it a “fundamental value to be fully upheld, respected and at the forefront of every decision we make.”

Mayweather is the first celebrity to ignore calls for a boycott after the company released the blackface sweater, but Mayweather is known for KOs in the boxing ring, not for being outspoken about issues of racial and social justice.
