Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

A math assignment involving words like “slave,” “master” and “cotton” is never a good idea.

But for second graders at Windsor Hill Elementary School in Los Angeles, their teachers apparently disagreed.

Parents were reportedly outraged when they saw the homework assignment that had been sent home with their children.

“When I read it I immediately told her she would not complete that assignment,” parent Kelly Gray told NBC Los Angeles. “It’s definitely disturbing using terms like plantation, master – my daughter doesn’t know what these things mean.”

However, Gray does not blame the specific teacher, as apparently, all the second graders at the elementary school received the same assignment.

“Someone could have said, ‘No! Are we really giving this assignment?'” she said. “I can’t image a month of any year of any era when this would be appropriate.”

“This is Black History Month — it’s hard enough to know you have ancestors who were slaves, but to hear it’s blown up in this type of way is disturbing,” said parent Karla Clark.

School officials are now investigating the case.
