Niecy Nash addresses misconceptions about her sexuality since marriage to Jessica Betts

Niecy Nash said she was drawn to Jessica Betts' soul and gender wasn't going to stop her from pursuing a relationship

At the end of August, Niecy Nash celebrated her new marriage to Jessica Betts on social media. Now the actress is speaking up to set the record straight for anyone who may be confused about her sexuality.

According to a new interview with PEOPLE, Nash first made it a point to be clear she fell in love with and then later married Betts because of their connection and that gender alone wasn’t enough to deter her from letting their love blossom.

“[My marriage] has absolutely nothing to do with gender and it has everything to do with her soul,” Nash, who divorced her second husband Jay Tucker in March, said of the singer. “She is the most beautiful soul I have ever met in my life.”

“I was not suppressing my sexuality my whole life,” she continued, seemingly addressing fans who wondered if she’d secretly been living in the closet all these years in the public eye.

“I love who I love. At one point in my life, I married twice and I love those people. And today I love this person. I’ve done everything I wanted to do on my own terms and my own way. So my choice now in a partner has nothing to do with who I’ve always been. It’s a matter of who I am in this moment.”

Nash did not feel that her relationship was a sudden development in her life.

“I don’t feel like my marriage is my coming out of anywhere, but rather a going into myself and being honest about who I love,” she clarified. “And I’m not limiting myself on what that love is supposed to look like.”

To those wondering if Betts had anything to do with her divorce she notes, “[Jessica] and I were friends, but I never saw her as someone I would date.”

Nash stated she felt close to Betts before they became romantically involved.

“I loved her before I was in love with her because she is such a special human being,” Nash concluded. “But we began to see each other in a way we never had before. Sometimes you get so broken by love, you run from it. But I’ve learned that you should always hold space for magic because it can happen at any time.”
