The former football star who made an inspirational recovery from a paralyzing game injury in 2000 won a seat on the Gloucester County Board of Freeholders Tuesday.

Eleven years ago, Adam Taliaferro suffered a spinal cord injury while making a tackle on the field in only his fifth game as a Penn State cornerback, with doctors fearing he may never walk again.

Tuesday, the Voorhees native won a seat on the Gloucester County Board of Freeholders with the most votes overall with 234 of 235 precincts reporting (as of 10:09 p.m.). Fellow Democrats Heather Simmons and Lyman Barnes won the other two seats open (maintaining Democratic control) in a race that also included Republicans Barb Capelli, Penni Heritage and Mike Pantaleo.

Taliaferro, now fully recovered from the injury, graduated from Penn State and then went on to law school at Rutgers-Camden University. Now a lawyer at Duane Morris in Cherry Hill specializing in labor and gaming law, he recently embarked on a political career as a Democratic candidate for the Gloucester County Board of Freeholders.

“My goal was always to play in the National Football League,” Taliaferro told Philly.com in mid-October. “When that was taken away, I had to step back and see what my life’s goal was. I realized that, in fact, I was one of the most blessed people. I was the product of the people who helped me all those years.”
