Sequel to ‘Surviving R. Kelly’ promises to reveal more about already shocking case

The Lifetime network show 'Surviving R. Kelly Part II: The Reckoning' is scheduled to premiere in January and will introduce a new group of survivors, supporters and others

Lifetime’s docuseries Surviving R Kelly addressed many of the rumors, secrets, and allegations against the R&B singer that have been swirling for years, now the producers are planning a follow up to the controversial documentary film.

According to Deadline, Surviving R. Kelly Part II: The Reckoning, the next chapter of the explosive Emmy-nominated series will debut January 2 and will air on three consecutive nights.

The project is executive produced by Joel Karsberg and Jesse Daniels of Kreativ Inc.; dream hampton, who created the original; Tamra Simmons; Maria Pepin; and Brie Miranda Bryant who executive produces for Lifetime. Sudi Khosropur is co-executive producer.

Lifetime says this offering will feature candid sit down interviews with a new crop of survivors, supporters, psychologists and cultural and legal experts. The network also promise “more insights into the ever-growing saga of the R&B singer, who is currently facing federal and state charges.”

This installment also seeks to explore, “why the voices of the girls that spoke up decades ago are only now being heard.”

While John Legend was once applauded for being one of the few celebrities willing to speak up in the first series, this one will reportedly include notable voices such as Jim DeRogatis, Damon Dash, Mathew Knowles, and Tarana Burke among others.

In preparation to this follow up, Lifetime will be airing a six-hour marathon of Part 1, in its entirety, starting at 3 p.m. January 2. This marathon will then lead up to the two-hour premiere of Part II at 9 p.m. The two-hour second episode of Part II begins at 9 p.m. January 3, with the 90-minute conclusion set for 8 p.m. January 4.

The network is continuing its partnership with the country’s largest anti-sexual violence organization, RAINN.

Kelly, 52, is jailed without bond on federal child pornography and obstruction charges in addition to 10 Illiois state charges for aggravated criminal sexual abuse. He has pleaded not guilty to both the federal and state charges.
