A suicide bomber, disguised in a school uniform, set off explosives during a high school assembly in the northeastern Nigerian city of Potiskum.

The explosion killed at least 48 students and injured many more, according to BBC News.

The weekly Monday morning assembly at the Government Technical Science College started like any other week, with around 2,000 students in attendance.

“We were waiting for the principal to address us, around 7:30 a.m., when we heard a deafening sound and I was blown off my feet,”  17-year-old student Musa Ibrahim Yahaya said. “People started screaming and running, I saw blood all over my body.”

Yahaya is being treated in the general hospital for head wounds sustained during the incident.

According to hospital records, 79 students were admitted to the hospital, some with injuries so severe that they may require amputations. The hospital is now so overcrowded that some students are admitted two to a bed.

A morgue attendant, speaking on condition of anonymity, said 48 bodies that appeared to be between the ages of 11 and 20 had been admitted.

According to reports from survivors, the bomber carried the explosives in a rucksack typical of the kind students bring to school.

Some parents are not pleased with the Nigerian government’s handling of school security and the threat of Boko Haram.

Garba Alhaji, whose child was wounded in the attack, said, “I strongly blame the Yobe state government for not fencing the college.” He does not believe the security measures at the school are strong enough, especially after a bomb was discovered there three months ago and had to be removed by the anti-bomb squad.
