USA Today columnist crowns LaVar Ball ‘worst sports parent ever’

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

USA Today has labeled LaVar Ball the worst sports parent in the history of ever, even beating out Marv Marinovich who has held the title for over 30 years.

Ball is known for his delusional claims about his talent and that of his son. He has now taken steps to pull his son out of high school so that he can turn the kid into “the best basketball player ever,” and this has some worried about his son’s well being.

Todd Marinovich gave an interview in may with Dan Patrick in which he spoke of the similarities between his father and Ball.

In case you are not aware of Marv Marinovich here’s a quick rundown of what he did to his son. When the boy was still an infant his father began training him to play football. Specialists were brought in to polish Todd’s skills on the field and everything he ate was monitored. He was forbidden from eating refined sugars, food colorings, fast food and nitrates and this was something Todd had to follow every single day. There were no cheat days in his household.

— Black NRA pundit on Fox News says there’s a bright side to mass shootings —

“I don’t think Marv was looking for the limelight. I just know that it was his passion to, ‘Can I help an athlete enhance his athleticism?’ And he was great at it. He helped me become the athlete and player that I was,” said Todd, whose drug problems put an end to his NFL career after only two years.

“But there’s a lot of other areas to life.”

Which is something Ball seems to have forgotten. By taking his son out of school he is robbing the boy of a vital piece of his youth, time he will never be able to get back.

The school that his son attended, Chino Hills High School, hired Dennis Latimore as coach last spring, and Ball is apparently not a fan.

“The coach made a comment the other day. He said, ‘All those 50 shots a game, that’s going to stop.’ So I’m like, ‘Wow,'” Ball said to ESPN. “And every kid he talks to, he asks which AAU program they play for and as soon as they mention my name, he goes the other way.

“I’m not going to put my son through all that.”

His tactic is perhaps a little wanting however because what he is teaching his son is that he does not have to listen to coaches and that quitting is preferable to a challenge.
