It’s never to late to make good on a promise and Washington Wizards All-Star John Wall plans to keep one to his father.

Wall promised his father, who died when he was eight, that he would get his business degree and the 27-year-old plans to go back to school and earn his bachelor’s degree from the University of Kentucky this summer.

“I’m going back to school this summer to get my business degree,” John Wall told The Washington Post. “That’s what I’m focusing on. I promised my dad that.”

Wall attended Kentucky from 2009-10 and starred as a one-and-done point guard under famed Wildcats coach John Calipari. He was then drafted No. 1 overall by Washington in the 2010. Wall has a lifetime scholarship from Kentucky and he intends to use it. Last month he wrote an open letter to his father in the Undefeated about their frequent prison visits when he was a child.

“I know you’re proud of the man I’ve become,” he wrote. “I’m the first in our family to attend college, and although I have not yet completed my degree, it is a goal that I hope to accomplish. My sister followed behind to become the first in our family to graduate from college and went on to get her master’s.”

Life after B-Ball

While John Wall said he’s uncertain how he’ll put his business degree to use after he retires from the NBA, he wants to be prepared for whatever life brings him.

“When our career is over, when we retire and the basketball stops bouncing, we still have to find something else to do,” Wall told The Washington Post. “Whether you want to be a general manager, a doctor, a businessman, whatever, you have to believe on everything you stand on.”
