Theresa Tillman said her daughter Lashuntae Benton was not an intended target of the shooting.  Another student noted that there had been other parties in the complex, which is popular with college students and had previously drawn large crowds such as the one this weekend. The crowd at this gathering did not seem to be affiliated with the university.

January was a freshman and a track and field athlete who majored in business management. While Benton was a sophomore and an athletic trainer studying sports medicine.
