Issa Rae raises over $400K for Alton Sterling’s children

After the shooting by the police of Alton Sterling, many responded with outrage and sympathy for the Sterling family. Watching Sterling’s 15-year-old son break down on television, asking for his father, was too much to bear for many viewers. Actress and writer Issa Rae of the web series “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl” decided to take action soon after the unsettling news.

Rae started a GoFundMe called the “Alton Sterling Family Scholarship Fund” and assured the public that all proceeds would go toward Alton Sterling’s five children. The eldest child, Cameron Sterling, can be seen at his mother’s side at a press conference, visibly mourning the death of his father in the clip below.

The effort has been extremely successful. Rae soon exceeded her original goal of $40,000 and raised it to $200,000. In one day, the GoFundMe raised over $400K from benefactors across the country.
