Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says GOP is ‘out of touch’ with Americans

New York Congresswoman critiques Mitch McConnell for not embracing Green New Deal proposal

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez believes Mitch McConnell is going to show just how out of touch Republican politicians are with the American people.

Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says her Green New Deal “belongs to indigenous communities, it belongs to the residents of Flint, it belongs to Puerto Rico, it belongs to the victims of wildfires.”

But Republicans believe the approach the plan lays out is a road map toward socialism.

The Green New Deal is a stimulus package that aims to address global warming, and it has received the support of dozens of Democrats who want to address the threats that Climate change poses to Earth.

According to USA Today, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., intends to bring up the measure for a Senate vote “to give everybody an opportunity to go on record to see how they feel about the Green New Deal.”

The proposal could force some Democrats, especially those in the presidential race, into the awkward position of angering left-leaning voters if they don’t back the plan.

“I say, ‘Go for it. Bring it on.’ You think it might embarrass Democrats to vote on a nonbinding resolution that maybe some of us support but not others? Trust me. We’ll be fine,” Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer said on the Senate floor Thursday. If “McConnell blocks amendments, we’ll know where he and his party stand – against science, against fact, ostriches with their heads buried in the sand as the tide comes in.”

Ocasio-Cortez was mocked recently by GOP officials for claiming that the “world is going to end in 12 years if we don’t address climate change.”

But the freshman congresswoman believes her critics are simply “terrified of this winning vision of a just and prosperous future,” she said.

“McConnell thinks he can end all debate on the Green New Deal now and stop this freight train of momentum,” said a statement from the office of Ocasio-Cortez. “Unfortunately for Mitch, all he’s going to do is show just how out of touch Republican politicians are with the American people.”
