Janet Mock files for divorce from husband of three years

Transgender rights activist Janet Mock is splitting from her husband after only about three years of marriage.

According to Out.com, Wednesday, the bestselling author who serves as a writer, producer, and director on the hit FX show Pose — officially filed for divorce from Aaron Tredwell, citing irreconcilable differences.

“Aaron and I have decided to part. I’m grateful for the years we shared and will look back on them fondly. I appreciate your well wishes as we continue onward separately with enduring reverence,” Mock shared in an exclusive statement to the publication.

The couple originally met in 2009, and memoir, Redefining Realness: My Path To Womanhood, Identity, Love & So Much More, details the road to her gender transition as told to Tredwell prior to their marriage. The book was published in 2014 and later that same year, Tredwell proposed.

Mock has often been cited as being one of the few real-life high profile depictions of what it looks like for a trans woman to be both successful in her career and have a “happy ending” in her personal life. As a result, the images from her A-list Hawaiian wedding near her hometown of Honolulu were even published in BRIDES magazine, a first for any trans woman of color.

In the accompanying essay Mock wrote for the spread she shares, “Though a wedding doesn’t make a marriage, being able to show up and declare our commitment in front of the people we love meant everything to us. The whole day was a statement on the transformative power of being seen for who you really are and being loved not despite your past and experiences but because of it.”

Though the marriage has ended, Mock and Tredwell appear to be separating amicably as her career continues to flourish thanks to her hit FX series, Pose. In fact, just this week Mock was named the 2019 Artist of the Year for Harvard University for her work in media, television, and activism.
