Lizzo named Time Magazine 2019 Entertainer of the Year

What an incredible year it has been for Lizzo! To cap it all off, Time magazine has named her 2019 Entertainer of the Year.
Lizzo skyrocketed to fame this year from the strength of catchy tunes like “Truth Hurts” and “Juice.” She received more Grammy nods than any other musician (eight) and has had fans and foes talking all year long – even as recently as this week when she showed up for a Lakers-Minnesota Timberwolves game wearing an oversized black t-shirt with a huge cut-out in the back to show her thong and fishnets.

That girl don’t give a rat’s fanny about what anybody says. Lizzo is doing Lizzo and that’s that.
This must feel incredibly rewarding to Lizzo who is not new to this. She’s been singing and rapping and performing and living in her car and playing flute (she’s classically trained) for almost a decade. When Time asked her why she thought this was her year, Lizzo replied: “I’ve been doing positive music for a long-ass time,” she says. “Then the culture changed. There were a lot of things that weren’t popular but existed, like body positivity, which at first was a form of protest for fat bodies and Black women and has now become a trendy, commercialized thing. Now I’ve seen it reach the mainstream. Suddenly I’m mainstream!”
This made her chuckle. “How could we have guessed something like this would happen when we’ve never seen anything like this before?”
Well, we’re seeing it now. Timing is key.

When Lizzo re-introduced “Truth Hurts” – two years after it initially dropped – it connected this time, in a MAJOR way. Suddenly the song was everywhere – topping the Billboard 100 and heard on the popular Netflix movie, “Someone Great.”
This year, she also released “Cuz I Love You,” her third studio album, which garnered her so much Grammy love.

Known for baring it all and some outrageous antics on stage, what we love about Lizzo is that she represents big girls and self-love and empowerment. Recently, she took to the stage at the VMAs in true Lizzo fashion, with a hard to miss prop – a giant, inflatable butt.
Still, in spite of how confident she comes across on stage, Lizzo told Time that she has her own insecurities like most people. Particularly this year.
While her stardom has been a dream realized and she’s finally getting the recognition that she is due, it hasn’t come without its challenges.
“I was experiencing a little bit of unhappiness. I was not happy with the way I felt to my body. I didn’t feel sexy, and I didn’t know when it was going to end. There were times when I would go onstage and be like, ‘Y’all, I’m not going to lie. I’m not feeling myself,’ Lizzo revealed to Time. “Sometimes I’d break down and cry. Sometimes the audience would just cheer to make me feel better. I was getting sick a lot. I was like, What the f-ck is going on? I need to fall back in love with my body.”
