U.S. Rep. LaMonica McIver of New Jersey pleaded not guilty this week in her federal criminal case brought by the Trump administration. Despite facing up to 17 years in prison if convicted, McIver told theGrio, “I have no doubt that I will be victorious.”
The Democrat made clear the “trumped up charges” against her are a result of her being a young Black woman. She argues Trump’s remarks about her made the bias very clear.
“In this moment of time that we’re in, we have to find our political courage,” she told theGrio.
McIver’s colleague U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas is fighting back in her own way. During a House Judiciary Committee hearing, the rising Democratic Party star went viral yet again after decrying the “math ain’t mathin’” when it comes to Trump’s immigration policies.
Crockett used a colorful example to point out what she says is hypocrisy in Trump’s plan to bring so-called “integrity” back to immigration visas – his wife, Melania Trump.
Democrats are also planning to fight back at the ballot box. The recent victory of the relatively unknown Zohran Mamdani in the New York City mayoral Democratic primary has the entire country buzzing. It also appears to have re-energized part of the Democratic Party base – namely young Black voters.
My colleague Natasha S. Alford breaks down in great analysis what Democrats and the country could learn from the Big Apple’s municipal race.
“Dems could get even more wins across the country if they aren’t threatened by new voices but welcome the sound of something different,” she writes.
