Dear Grio Fam,
This week brought a wave of sadness across Black America as we mourn the loss of Malcolm-Jamal Warner, an actor who meant far more to us than just a character on TV. He was a symbol of positive Black representation, artistic excellence, and deep devotion to family. We’ll remember him not just for the roles he played, but for the life he built and the love he gave.

Read Panama Jackson’s heartfelt reflection on why his passing feels like losing a brother, and don’t miss our story on how Warner found his greatest role off-screen — as a husband and father.

Meanwhile, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley is sounding the alarm about the release of decades-old FBI files on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. These are documents that even members of the King family never wanted public.

In an exclusive interview with our own Gerren Keith Gaynor, Pressley warns us not to be distracted: “The work of dismantling and defunding diversity, equity, and inclusion began with attacks on Black leadership,” she said, naming names and connecting the dots in this political moment.

On a lighter note, Kelly Rowland is back on our screens, and not just looking stunning —she’s judging a new Netflix reality competition called Building the Band. Instead of tearing folks down, she’s helping rising stars find their rhythm. And let’s be real… any show with Ms. Kelly at the helm? We’re watching.

And if you haven’t yet, subscribe to TheGrio Weekly on YouTube, where your favorite Grio voices (including Panama Jackson, Gerren Keith Gaynor and yours truly) break down the biggest stories of the week with smart takes and the facts you need.

We’ll be in the comments ready to hear your thoughts—hope to see you there!
