Hey Grio Fam,
September felt like a whirlwind! And while I was hoping October would give us a moment to breathe, it’s clear the news cycle didn’t get that memo. We’re only one week in, and already we’ve seen the Trump administration deploy ICE and the National Guard in ways that have Chicago officials, activists, and residents on edge. From Mayor Brandon Johnson pushing back against Trump’s threat to invoke the Insurrection Act to Vic Mensa raising alarms about ICE targeting Black Chicagoans, the fight to protect Black and brown communities is as urgent as ever.

But even in the chaos, there’s still space for joy, celebration, and affirmation. Over the weekend, Black creatives and stars gathered in New York for CultureCon 2025, a vibrant reminder of the power of storytelling, community, and unapologetic Blackness.

“We’re seeing at a drastic rate this messaging of being smaller, being afraid, shrinking. That can be contagious. But I also think joy and hope can be contagious,” CultureCon’s founder told theGrio. “We need a space where we can be reminded of our power. When we’re isolated, it’s easy to assume we have to face everything alone. But when we get together and see how much power we have, when we just show up for each other, it’s inspiring to keep going.”

Black cultural celebrations are continuing across the country as it’s officially HBCU homecoming season! If you’re trying to figure out which cookout, step show, or concert to attend, we’ve got the ultimate guide ready for you.

October is also Women’s Business Month, and here at theGrio, that means it’s Black Women’s Business Month. This week, we’re spotlighting Dr. Fatimah Turner, who’s brewing coffee and community in New Jersey with her business Inner City Café.

Plus, it’s officially HBCU Homecoming season, and if you’re trying to figure out which cookout, step show, or concert to hit, we’ve got the ultimate guide ready for you.

So yes, the news is heavy. But as always, our culture stays undefeated. So do me a solid, head over to theGrio.com. Read the stories. Share the stories. Repost them. And help us do what we do best: amplify Black stories.
Until next time,
