College student invents life saving coats for homeless

Most college students are concerned about graduating, finding a career and starting their lives. But Veronika Scott is a little different. She is spending all her time and money on helping the homeless with an amazing new creation.
A choir of homeless people practices Christmas songs, while just down the hall, a young woman is fine tuning her own creation. Veronica Scott has invented what could be a life-saving gift for people living on the streets.
Veronika says “we call it the elements coat or element survival.”
A vapor barrier used for buildings keeps the wearer dry. Wool blankets sewn inside provide the warmth. It’s more than a coat.
Veronika says “at night becomes a waterproof and almost self heating sleeping bag.”
The idea came from a class project at the college for creative studies, where veronika is entering her senior year.
“There we go.”
She sewed two prototypes before this one.
Veronika used all her savings on the project and coaxed Carhartt to donate material. She spent months researching the needs of the homeless.
Veronika says “I became known as the coat lady down at MLK and Cass.”
Her goal is to get 25 coat sleeping bags on the streets this winter. They’ll be sewn here at Cass Community Social Services.
Rev. Faith Fowler, of the Cass Community Social Services, says “the coat wont end homelessness but it will save the lives of some who won’t come into shelters for a variety of reasons. Not too many people give up their savings to start something for the homeless.”
Veronika hopes the coats will catch on and help the homeless in cold weather cities across the country.
