Haiti rainy season brings signs of cholera spike
U.S.-based Partners in Health reports that the number of new cases has tripled in recent weeks at a clinic in the town of Mirebalais
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — A medical aid group says a spike in new cholera cases at a rural clinic in Haiti may be a sign that the outbreak is starting to surge again with the spring rainy season.
U.S.-based Partners in Health reports that the number of new cases has tripled in recent weeks at a clinic in the town of Mirebalais. That’s not far from where the outbreak started in October.
Partners in Health said Wednesday that its workers are seeing more cholera in the Haitian capital and elsewhere in the countryside. Doctors Without Borders said it has also seen more cases but reported less-dramatic increases.
Cholera is spread by contact with contaminated water. The outbreak has sickened 250,000 people and killed nearly 5,000.
