Yesterday Rihanna released her new music video ‘Man Down,’ which tells the story of a battered woman seeking revenge. The video’s intense themes are creating a sensation online. Some are questioning if this video is Rihanna’s revenge against Chris Brown.

In an interview with MTV, director Anthony Mandler talked about the video’s shock factor.

“It’s just one of those songs that demands a strong narrative and visual, and let’s just say she let me go all the way. So I think you can expect something that’s dramatic and shocking and intense and emotional and uplifting and enlightening.”

Rihanna’s followers should not be shocked by the depictions within the video since she tweeted about the video’s content prior to its airing, “It’s #Gritty, #Gully, #Emotional, #JamRock, Very strong underlying message for girls like me! #listentoyomama.”

The video has a dramatic opening with Rihanna on a balcony in Jamaica, where she shoots a man who is walking through a busy train station. The singer then flees the scene and the video then backtracks through the night before the shooting. After leaving a nightclub, Rihanna’s male dance partner follows her outside and begins to get violent. The video cuts to the songstress on the ground crying, after what appears to have been a brutal assault.

According to Radar Online Rihanna allowed her restraining order against Brown to be dropped last February to a level one, allowing the performers to be at award shows and music venues at the same time. Just weeks ago the ‘S&M’ singer made headlines when she began following her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown on Twitter (he followed suit shortly thereafter). Fans of the Barbadian pop star believed she was beginning to forgive Brown for the physical abuse she endured while with him.

Moments after releasing her new video the singer reached out to fans via Twitter saying, “Young girls/women all over the world…we are a lot of things! We’re strong innocent fun flirtatious, vulnerable and sometimes our innocence can cause us to be naïve! We always think it could NEVER be us, but in reality, it can happen to ANY of us! So ladies be careful and listen to yo mama! I love and I care!”
