Week 1: Carolina @ Arizona – National Champion and Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton makes his pro debut on the same field where he won his last collegiate game. There is optimism in Arizona as there is a new quarterback in Kevin Kolb and Larry Fitzgerald is in Arizona for the foreseeable future thanks to a new contract. (AP Photo/Rick Havner)

Week 1: Pittsburgh @ Baltimore – There is a fair share of hatred in this rivalry as the Steelers have shown the Ravens the playoff exit three times since 2000. The rivalry took on a new twist when Ravens running back Ray Rice (pictured) tweeted “Not a good look” regarding the Steelers Hines Ward arrest for DUI weeks after he won the Dancing With The Stars competition. Week 1: Oakland @ Denver – Offensive coordinator turned head coach Hue Jackson opens what will hopefully be a long and successful tenure with the Raiders on the road against the hated Denver Broncos. The Broncos have a new coach in defensive-minded John Fox. Jackson is a risk taker and has a knack for the deep ball. (AP Photo/Eric Risberg)

Week 2: Philadelphia @ Atlanta – Michael Vick returns to Atlanta for the first time as a starting quarterback for an opposing team. Vick talked about how Falcons owner Arthur Blank wrote him while he was in prison and how he always appreciated the Falcons fans. I’m sure that it will be an emotional day for a young man whose career has come full circle. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)

Week 3: Atlanta @ Tampa Bay – Many people have the Falcons Matt Ryan anointed as the next great quarterback to emerge. However, after a dismal showing in last season’s playoffs those experts should reserve judgement. Meanwhile in Tampa, a young QB named Josh Freeman is carving out an impressive resume of his own. Week 5: Arizona @ Minnesota – In Philly they were the present and future of a franchise with Super Bowl aspirations, now Donovan McNabb and Kevin Kolb will be battling just to keep their respective teams in the playoff picture. McNabb has been traded twice in the past two seasons and is trying to salvage his career, while Kolb has a new lease on life after being bounced up and down the depth chart in Philly. Week 8: Dallas @ Philadelphia – Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan called the Eagles the “all-hype team” due their off-season acquisitions which didn’t go over too well with Eagles quarterback Michael Vick. If the Eagles offense has their way, they’ll still be scoring on the ‘Boys well into Tuesday. (AP Photo/LM Otero, File)

Week 7: Denver @ Miami – Embattled wide receiver Brandon Marshall (pictured) faces his former Broncos teammates for the first time since being traded in 2010. It has been a tumultuous offseason for Marshall who was stabbed in the stomach by his wife in April, he suffered non life-threatening injuries. In July Marshall was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. Let’s hope by the time these two teams meet Marshall has his life in order. (AP Photo/Brian Blanco)

Week 10: Arizona @ Philadelphia – Michael Vick and Kevin Kolb developed a friendship amidst the firestorm of training camps and the regular season. Now both are looked upon as leaders on their respective teams and for 60 minutes the bond that was built will go out the window. My question is if Vick plays poorly and Kolb does great does a “We want Kevin!” chant go up? Or maybe “Fire Andy!” (Photo by Doug Benc/Getty Images)

Week 12: New England @ Philadelphia – In what many termed a Super Bowl preview Tom Brady and the Patriots come to Philadelphia looking to hold off the Jets as the playoffs approach. While the Eagles are chasing home field throughout the playoffs. I’m curious to see how quickly some put a “good vs. evil” twist on this game. (AP Photo/Michael Dwyer)

Week 12: Green Bay @ Detroit – In what will be the most important Thanksgiving Day Game in recent Detroit Lions memory Ndamukong Suh and a relentless Lions pass rush beat up on Aaron Rodgers and the World Champion Packers pulling to within 2 games of the division leaders with 5 games remaining. Week 14: Buffalo @ San Diego — Shawne Merriman welcomes Phillip Rivers and some of his former mates to what will be a frozen Ralph Wilson Stadium. Merriman’s last five season’s have been abysmal, he looks to be back on track in low-key Buffalo. The improved Bills defense is looking to put a potentially hot San Diego Chargers offense on ice.(Photo by Rick Stewart/Getty Images)

Week 14: New England @ Washington — Hey! Hey! Hey! Guess who’s coming to town, and he isn’t coming to run windsprints. Albert Haynesworth is returning to DC in the midst of a comeback season and is looking to personally bury what is left of another dismal season in Washington. (AP Photo/Michael Dwyer, File)

Week 16: NY Giants @ NY Jets — Plaxico Burress couldn’t have written this any better, Christmas Eve in New York against the team that gave up on him and refused to bring them back. On this day Burress undresses a depleted Giants secondary. The look on Tom Coughlin’s face on this day will resemble that of a kid with coal in his stocking. (AP Photo/Bill Kostroun)

Week 16: Minnesota @ Washington — McNabb runs for touchdowns of 20+ yards just to prove there are no “cardiovascular endurance” issues lingering from last season. Ever the gentleman, McNabb looks for Mike Shanahan after the game only to realize that he did windsprints toward the tunnel after the final gun. (Photo by Hannah Foslien/Getty Images)
After a four-month lockout, a feverish but historical free agency period and a preseason disguised as training camp the NFL’s 81st season is upon us. From the looks of things, the Vince Lombardi Trophy is up for grabs. Outside of your typical matchups and rivalries, I went through the league schedule and came up with 16 storylines of my own that may interest you. These are the games to watch and the stars (Cam Newton, Josh Freeman, Donovan McNabb, Michael Vick and Chad Ochcocinco to name a few) who will be shining.
