theGrio’s hip-hop update: Kendrick Lamar vs. the world

All week, social media has been ablaze because of Big Sean’s track called “Control,” which features both Jay Electronica and Kendrick Lamar.

Lamar’s verse got all the attention because he calls out and challenges fellow emcees like Drake and J. Cole.

The Compton rapper even claimed to be the “King of New York,” which drew multiple reactions from fans and music insiders alike.

Brooklyn’s Joell Ortiz, Atlanta’s B.O.B. and Chicago’s Lupe Fiasco were among the first rappers to respond to the track and Lamar doesn’t even mention them on the record.

Who else will step up? Only time will tell.

While Lamar’s lyrics may have woken up hip-hop, it seems like others are trying to find ways to ruin it.

Singer and actress Miley Cyrus has let the world know she loves to twerk and appreciates hip-hop.

And now she’s rapping. French Montana features Cyrus on a remix to his hit “Ain’t Worried About Nothin’.” The backlash came quick but she was ready with a retort to the attacks on Twitter.
