After a week of headlines, and widespread criticism, boxing promoter Damon Feldman appears to have called off his planned “celebrity” boxing match between George Zimmerman and rapper DMX.

“I want to thank everyone for the good n bad comments I’ve made the choice to cancel the fight w George Zimmermann more to life than money [sic],” Feldman tweeted this afternoon.

The event, which was supposed to be available via pay-per-view, sparked a huge backlash with pundits and even a petition urging for it to be called off.

DMX was also attacked for even considering to appear in the fight, although his representatives always insisted that he had never officially signed on.

Zimmerman, who was acquitted last year of second degree murder charges in the death of George Zimmerman, had apparently expressed enthusiasm for the fight. For his part, DMX had promised to break “every rule in boxing to make sure I f**k him right up.”

Yet as of right now, it appears he will never get the chance.
