The Whitney Houston biopic is officially underway as model and actress Yaya DaCosta has been cast to play the iconic singer in Lifetime’s upcoming film of the late legend.

TV Line reports that the 31-year-old DaCosta will take on the lead role in the biopic as it explores Houston’s rocky relationship with singer Bobby Brown and her rise to world fame.

The biopic is being directed by Angela Bassett, who will make her directorial debut with this film.

“I have such regard for both Whitney’s and Bobby’s amazing talents and accomplishments, and I feel a responsibility in the telling of their story,” said Bassett in a statement when the news was first announced in May.

“Their humanity and bond fascinates us all. I’m beyond excited to have this opportunity to go behind the camera and into their world.”

Bassett took to Twitter Saturday to tweet the news of DaCosta’s casting.

DaCosta previously stared in Season 3 of America’s Next Top Model. She has since gone on to star in a number of TV shows including All My Children, Ugly Betty and House. DaCosta has also starred on the big-screen with a role in Lee Daniels’ The Butler.
