New BET documentary tackles homophobia in the black church

VIDEO - First look at BET.com's moving documentary about homophobia in the black church...

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

BET’s Entertainment Editor Clay Cane is tackling homophobia in the black church in a new documentary called Holler If You Hear Me: Black and Gay in the Church.

The film follows black people who are torn between identifying as LGBT and following their faith, in cultures that are often antagonistic toward people like them.

In going to Atlanta, Georgia, Cane talks to these individuals about this great cultural taboo and addresses the ways that we can move forward toward a more unifying message of love and compassion.

As BET.com’s Entertainment Editor, Cane has often written about this issue and has even addressed the topic in an essay called “Religious Zombies,” among others.

As the country moves forward with LGBT rights and marriage equality as well as the “Transgender Tipping Point,” there is no better time to be having this important conversation.
