When police arrived, they found Meagher on the bed with a gunshot wound to the head, and she was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital, where she later died of her injuries.
Fields admitted to shooting Meagher but insisted that it was an accident.
He said that it was part of a roleplay scenario in which he put a gun to her head. Although he had removed the magazine from the gun, he forgot to remove the bullet from the chamber, so when he pulled the trigger, he fired the bullet into her head.
A sexual battery examination showed no signs of injuries consistent with battery, and surveillance footage showed that the two entered the hotel room consensually. According to Fields, the two had known each other for only two days.
