‘Good riddance Castro!’ Hundreds of Cuban-Americans celebrate the death of the dictator in Miami

Early Saturday morning, hundreds of Cuban-Americans took to the streets of Miami to celebrate the announcement that Fidel Castro had died at age 90.

The celebrations over the death of the dictator that so many of them fled filled the streets as some danced and others banged pots and pans together. Car horns sounded everywhere as people waved Cuban flags in jubilation.

People have been fleeing Cuba to the United States, especially to Florida, since Castro’s regime took over in the 1950s. According to the Economist, more than half a million Cubans fled from their home country in the 15 years after the revolution.

Many Cuban-Americans became citizens due to a provision of the Cuban Adjustment Act in 1965 known as “Wet Feet, Dry Feet.” The policy stated that any Cubans who made it to the United States would be granted the chance to stay, but if they were discovered in the water between the countries, they would be send elsewhere. Additionally, about 300,000 Cubans came to the United States via “Freedom Flights” between 1965 and 1973.

In addition to the celebrations on the streets, people took to social media to celebrate the downfall of the Cuban dictator. Fidel Castro was trending following the announcement of his death.
