White teen wears Black Lives Matter shirt to Thanksgiving, gives brilliant response to naysayers

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

We just found the fun person at Rebecca Malstrom’s Thanksgiving dinner this year: Rebecca herself.

When her family asked that she change out of the Black Lives Matter shirt she was wearing to dinner, she was more than willing to oblige. She changed her shirt alright, but it was another Black Lives Matter shirt, one that said it not one time like her first one but 13 times.

She said she wore the shirt in the first place because it’s a topic that she feels “definitely needs more support.” Her family, however, wanted to take a day off from the political tensions of the nation.

“We had a strict ‘no politics’ rule, so when one family member asked me to change, I followed the command and changed… into another BLM shirt,” said the University of Maryland student.

She posted photos of both shirts to Twitter, and the story was an instant internet sensation.

Malstrom said that the reaction from her family when she returned to the table “wasn’t as exciting as it could’ve been.”

She ended up covering the shirt with a sweater to keep any conflict at bay, but she wore it again, uncovered, the next night at her “friendsgiving.”

“That’s when I told everyone that my tweet had blown up. Their reactions were priceless!” she said.

“I love my entire family to Pluto and back, but we don’t see eye to eye on politics. However, they have all shown their support and are so proud of me for standing for what I believe in,” Malstrom said to Mashable. “Even though not all of my family agrees with my political views, everyone was ecstatic to see how much of an impact I had on the internet.”
