Carson refers to slaves as ‘immigrants’ in talk to HUD employees

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson raised eyebrows and left people scratching their heads after he spoke to HUD employees and said that slaves were “immigrants.”

“That’s what America is about. A land of dreams and opportunity,” Carson said. “There were other immigrants who came here in the bottom of slave ships, worked even longer, even harder for less.”

“But they, too, had a dream that one day their sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters, great-granddaughters might pursue prosperity and happiness in this land,” he added.

This is certainly not the first time that Carson has made questionable comments in reference to slavery, at one point comparing abortion to slavery when he was a Republican presidential candidate.
