Earlier this month, Breana Harmon Talbott had been reported missing by her fiancé after he found her car door open and her personal effects and phone nearby.

Talbott, 18, reappeared in a Texas church later that day, interrupting the service by appearing in only a shirt, bra and underwear with scratches visible on her skin. She claimed that she had been abducted by “three black males” wearing ski masks and that she had been taken to the woods near the church and was gang-raped.

However, according to police, medical examiners “were unable to corroborate that Talbott had been sexually assaulted.”

In a statement released Wednesday, Denison Police admitted that they had growing doubt about the Texas teen’s story until on Tuesday night, Talbott admitted to having made the whole thing up. She admitted that she staged the church entrance and that she had cut herself.

“Breana Harmon Talbott’s hoax was also insulting to our community and especially offensive to the African-American community due to her description of the so-called suspects in her hoax,” police said. “The anger and hurts caused from such a hoax are difficult and all so unnecessary.”

Talbott is now facing a misdemeanor charge of making a false report to a police officer.
