Maryland Teen dances from hospital bed days after heart transplant

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

Just six days after his lifesaving heart transplant Maryland teen Amari Hall was dancing in his hospital bed.

“All his life he has been a fighter,” his mom, Juaquinna Hall said to CNN. “He remained positive throughout it all.”

Amari, 15 is from Capitol Heights, Maryland and was born with a congenital heart defect known as hypoplastic left heart syndrome.

The video was taken back in March but was posted on May 18 by Amari’s aunt Charawan Hunter. In the video, you can see the nurses getting in on the dance party along with the boy.

“Organ donation is so important,” Hunter said. “I think that a lot of people are scared of organ donation.”

By the time he was two-years-old Amari had had three corrective surgeries on his heart and for most of his life he was able to function quite well. Until last year when he got the news that his heart was failing.

His reaction to the news took his family by surprise.

“He looked at me, and he said, ‘What are you afraid of? It’s my time,’” according to his mother, “‘I need to have this done.’”

Amari lived at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore for three months while he waited for a heart to become available. Then in March, they got the news that he would be receiving a new heart.

According to family, he was back to his “cheery self” within a week of getting the surgery. Doctors are hopeful he will be able to return to school come fall.
