On Thursday, President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence released a petition demanding that all players and fans in the NFL stand during the national anthem.

“The President has asked for a list of supporters who stand for the National Anthem. Add your name below to show your patriotism and support,” the petition read.

It was released the day after Trump criticized the league for not enacting a rule that would punish players who knelt during the national anthem.

“The NFL has decided that it will not force players to stand for the playing of our National Anthem. Total disrespect for our great country!” Trump tweeted on Wednesday morning.

On Tuesday, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell expressed his belief that everyone “should” stand for the national anthem but noted that the league would not institute a rule to force players to do so.

The petition is just the latest move by Trump and his administration aimed at the NFL protests. The president has targeted the protests as disrespecting the flag and the troops, when in fact, the players and others participating in the protests have specifically stated that they are taking a knee in protest of the racial inequality in the United States.
