Trump plans to release JFK assassination documents amid concerns

Donald Trump has said he plans to release thousands of classified government documents connected to the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy. He made his announcement on Twitter Saturday morning.

“Subject to the receipt of further information, I will be allowing, as President, the long blocked and classified JFK FILES to be opened,” he tweeted.

The information has been held in secret at the National Archives and thousands are never-before-seen documents. A 1992 law that was looking to end assassination conspiracy theories mandated that the information be released by October 26 of this year.

Trump does have the power to block the release and has been pressured by various agencies to do so. Their concern is that some of the documents could damage national security interests.

When asked for clarification on what the president meant when he said “subject to the receipt of further information,” the White House did not respond.

While it is not clear what types of revelations might be exposed, most researchers are not expecting many surprises. They fully expect the narrative to stay the same, that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone.

According to Philip Shenon, a former New York Times reporter and author, and Larry J. Sabato, a University of Virginia professor and author at least some of the documents are related to a “mysterious chapter in the history of the assassination — a six-day trip that J.F.K. assassin Lee Harvey Oswald paid to Mexico City several weeks before the president’s murder, in which Oswald met with Cuban and Soviet spies and came under intensive surveillance by the C.I.A.’s Mexico City station. Previously released F.B.I. documents suggest that Oswald spoke openly in Mexico about his intention to kill Kennedy.”

With October 26 approaching, Donald Trump has been getting pressure from both sides. Those in the government who want to keep the information behind closed doors and those who want Trump to release the documents with transparency in mind.

President Trump himself is a connoisseur of conspiracy theories so it will be interesting to see his final decision.
